Phyllis (Siebert) Gerline

July 23, 1930 - August 27, 2018

Phyllis (Siebert) Gerline, 88, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2018 surrounded by her family.

Phyllis was born July 23, 1930 to Gilbert and Ruth (Waters) Siebert. Phyllis had one brother, Don (Margaret) Siebert who preceded her in death in 1980. She grew up in Marietta where she started school in a one-room school house, graduated from Mount Auburn High School, and then went on to Franklin College. In December 1950, she married Jack Gerline and they had three children, Greg, Jill, and Jan. Her children and grandchildren – Melissa, Geoff, Natalia, Samir, Chloe and Emma as well as her great-grandchildren – Conner and Adam, were the light of her life.

Phyllis was not only mother, grandmother and great-grandmother she was her family’s number one fan. She enjoyed everything from decorating houses, attending tennis matches, swim lessons and soccer games, cheering at dance competitions to beating everyone at cards. Along with her family, Phyllis loved the Marietta United Methodist Church where she played the piano for over 70 years and took such pride in their recent sanctuary remodel. Other joys for Phyllis were attending the Indianapolis 500 for over 60 years, cheering on the Butler Bulldogs, eating at Texas Roadhouse along with Butterscotch pie and banana ice cream. Phyllis worked at Camp Atterbury, Irwin Union and Key Bank where she thoroughly enjoyed talking with each and every customer. Most of all she loved family dinners where she would win every card game and remind us with a smile that the prize was the same whether you win or lose.

The family would like to thank all of the caregivers during her illness with special thanks to Dr. Loman, the staff at Cypress Run and MHP and especially to Dr. Zietlow, who was such a comfort to her family in the final days. A warm thank you of appreciation to her special friends, Linda Price and Barb Montgomery who provided comfort and laughs.

Services will be held at 1pm Friday August 31, 2018 at Marietta United Methodist Church, 5493 S. Marietta Road, Shelbyville. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 4pm to 8pm Thursday at Freeman Family Funeral Homes, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Blue River Foundation to establish a scholarship in her name.
