James Richard Marshall

September 18, 1930 - July 09, 2017

James Richard Marshall, 86, of Morristown, passed away Sunday, July 9, 2017 at Community Hospital North in Indianapolis.

He was born September 18, 1930, in Union Township, Shelby County, the son of Stanley and Opal (Phares) Marshall.

Richard graduated from Morristown High School, after attending eight years in the former Union Township grade school.

He married, his wife of 66 years, Martha (Purcell) Marshall on November 4, 1950, and she survives.

Richard and Martha had three children, Constance Jo (Marshall) Proctor who passed away on April 12, 2000, Carren Sue (Marshall) Dieckmann and husband, Steven, of Osgood, and Gary Todd Marshall and wife, Vickie, of Shelbyville; grandchildren, Ryan Marshall and wife, Angela, and Joe Marshall and wife, Tabatha, both of Shelbyville, Cari (Dieckmann) Beggs and husband, Jeff, of Greensburg, Alicia (Dieckmann) Simon and husband, Danny, and Kyle Dieckmann and wife, Reyna, both of Osgood, Megan Phares and husband, Randy, of Fountaintown; great-grandchildren, Adrianna, Kendall, Greta and Sadie Beggs, Brynlie and Rylin Simon, Audrey Dieckmann, Victoria, Andrew and Allison Marshall and Ella Jo and Ryker Arie Ray Phares; and son-in-law, John Proctor and wife, Jan, of Morristown.

After retiring from life-long farming in 1998 and moving to Morristown, Richard took up woodworking and made many articles for family and friends.

He loved his family and his family felt very fortunate to call him “Dad”. Richard enjoyed being around others and liked to share stories and tell jokes. He also enjoyed reminiscing about local history.

Richard loved his church and was very active at Little Blue River Baptist Church, where he was a member for over 60 years. After retiring and moving to Morristown, he was currently a member of the Morristown Christian Church.

He was also a member of the Morristown Masonic Lodge No. 193 F&AM for over 50 years, Scottish Rite of Indianapolis, and Murat Shrine.

Richard was a member of the Shelby County Farm Bureau for several years. He served on the Shelby County Planning Commission for four years, Union Township trustee and was on the Shelby Eastern School Board for a year.

He was on the Asbury Cemetery Board for 32 years, serving 19 years as president of the board.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville, with Masonic ritual at 7:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 13, 2017 at the funeral home, with Pastor Fred Hickman officiating.

Interment will be at Asbury Cemetery in Morristown.
