Alice Merle Hayes, 99, of Shelbyville died Monday, July 9, 2007 at Major Hospital. Born May 28, 1908 in Greensburg, she was the daughter of Lewis A. and Nellie (Robbins) Bower. She married Ralph M. Hayes on Dec. 2, 1929, and he preceded her in death in November of 1974. Survivors include her daughter, Deloris Jean (husband, Ray) Cecil of Shelbyville; daughter-in-law, Janet Swarthout; grandchildren, Vicki (husband, Gary) Oldham, H. Allen (wife, Lisa) Lay, Dara (husband, Gregg) Hebbe, LeaAnne (husband, Yancy) Chipman, R. Bryan (wife, Julie) Lay, Michael (wife, Mary) Hayes, Mark (wife, Kim) Hayes and Matthew (wife, Eva) Hayes; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by her parents; son, Richard P. Hayes; brother Lewis E. Bower; half brother, Earl Chanley; one great-grandchild; and one great-great granchild. Mrs. Hayes was a florist and had been employed at Cossairt's Florist for 31 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Shelby County Arts and Crafts Club and Sewing Club. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Freeman Family Funeral Homes, Carmony-Ewing Broadway Chapel, 232 W. Broadway St. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Campbell officiating. Interment will be in Van Pelt Cemetery in Shelby County. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 34 W. Washington St., Shelbyville, IN 46176.
