Alton Edmond Benefiel

Alton Edmond Benefiel, 91, of Greenwood, formerly of Morristown, passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at IU Health University Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born October 9, 1930, in Shelby County, the son of Ross and Ruth (Kuhn) Benefiel. On October 19, 1957, he married Kathleen Caldwell, and she preceded him in death in 1996. Alton is survived by his son, David Benefiel and wife, Jamie, of Morristown; daughters, Cindy Snyder and Mira Wilson and husband, Charles, both of Greenwood; brother, Wayne Benefiel of Carmel; sister, Charlene McColley of Shelbyville; grandchildren, Jason Benefiel, James Benefiel, Lauri Streeval, Devon Wilson, Brittany Wilson and Brianna Wilson; great-grandchildren, Ty Streeval, Eli Streeval, Kennedy Streeval, Easton Streeval, Rilee Benefiel, Zoe Benefiel, Lily Benefiel, Madilynn Wilson and Emma Wilson; sister-in-law, Florence Stoneking and husband, Owen, of Greensburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to Kathleen, Alton was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Theresa Benefiel; brothers, Doyle Benefiel and Donald Benefiel; sisters, Iris Baringer, Ilene Shelton, Joan Woods and Lillian DelRomano; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Elmer and Blonda Caldwell; and brother-in-law, Paul Caldwell. He graduated in 1948 from Shelbyville High School. Alton was a veteran of the US Army, serving during the Korean War. He was formerly a glazer at Brooks Plate Glass retiring in 1995, with 43 years of service. Alton enjoyed gardening, woodworking, reading and working crossword puzzles. A Gathering of Friends will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at Fairview United Methodist Church, 1880 W 900 N, Fountaintown, Indiana. A Celebration of Alton’s Life will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the church, with Rev. Heather Cress officiating. Inurnment will be at 12 noon, Wednesday at Asbury Cemetery in Morristown, with military graveside rites conducted by the local military committee.
