Armond "Nick" Ciarletta Sr., 77, of Shelbyville, died Thursday, June 8, 2006.
Born June 11, 1928, in Coraopolis, Penn., he was the son of Angelo Anthony Ciarletta and Marie (Gavita) Ciarletta Ross. He married Dorothy Colee on April 8, 1951, and she survives.
Other survivors include one son, Armond "Nick" (wife, Judy) Ciarletta Jr. of Shelbyville; two daughters, Vickie (husband, Bill) Manning and Michelle (husband, Matt) Cole, both of Shelbyville; two sisters, Anna Marie Miller of Shelbyville and Betty Jean Work of Coraopolis; one brother, Chuck Ross of Cranberry Township, Penn.; seven grandchildren, Jade Ciarletta, Angel Brokering, Melanie Dowell, Jennifer Turley, Nisha Ciarletta, Erica Cole and Emily Cole; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Angelo Ciarletta; and one sister, Eleanor Schreckengost.
Mr. Ciarletta had been a climatic control engineer with Naval Avionics for 30 years, retiring in 1984. He previously had been employed with Allegheny Airlines at the Greater Pittsburgh Airport; a local barber, passing his boards from Pittsburgh, Pa.; and a local musician for many years.
He was on the Shelbyville Auxiliary Police Force from 1962 to 1968.
Mr. Ciarletta was a staff sergeant in the Pennsylvania National Guard, stationed in Ulm, Germany. He had tested and was influential with the Tomahawk Missile and the space shuttle.
He had attended radio school in Fort Monmouth, N.J.
Mr. Ciarletta was a charter member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 2118 and held the highest degree, Pilgrim. He was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion and former lodge administrator for the Muncie and Shelbyville Moose Lodges.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. today at Freeman Family Funeral Homes, Carmony-Ewing Harrison Street Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at the funeral home, with the Rev. Robb L. Barlow officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, with military rites conducted by local veterans organizations.
