Avis “Joy” Thomas, 91, of Shelbyville, passed away Friday, July 31, 2015 at Heritage House of Shelbyville.
She was born July 4, 1924, in Avoca, the daughter of Hobart and Gretna (McDonald) Massey. On October 26, 1946, she married Charles Thomas, and he preceded her in death on March 21, 2003.
Joy is survived by her daughter Linda June Turner and husband, Roy, of Shelbyville; grandsons, Jess Turner and wife, Sara, and Timothy Turner; and great-grandchildren, Katie Turner, Luke Turner and Ava Turner.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Verla Harding.
Joy graduated from Needmore High School on April 22, 1942.
She was a member of the Shelbyville Assembly of God, where she played the piano for 50 years. Joy was also a member of Shelby Senior Services.
Joy and her husband co-owned Thomas Apartments and Guinea Pig Supermarket.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, August 3, 2015 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at the funeral home, with Rev. Bill Horner officiating.
Interment will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hilltop Cemetery in Avoca.
Memorial contributions may be made to Shelby Senior Services, 1504 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
