Barbara J. Schutz

Barbara J. Schutz, 81, of Shelbyville, formerly of Gary, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at Major Hospital. She was born November 27, 1932, in Gary, the daughter of Bernard and Erma (Scharr) Minninger. She married James Schutz on June 16, 1956, and he preceded her in death on January 22, 1995. Survivors include her daughters, Lynn Wininger-Smith of Tallahassee, Florida, Nancy Mazonas and husband, Gregg, of Shelbyville and Sharon Riddle and husband, Jerry, of Greenwood; sister, Marjorie Bell of Merrillville; and grandchildren, Jennifer Mazonas, Michelle Mazonas, Natalie Wininger, Mitchell Wininger, Annette Wininger and Taylor Smith. She was also preceded in death by her parents. Barbara graduated in 1951 from Lew Wallace High School in Gary. She received her bachelor’s degree in education from Indiana University Bloomington in 1955. Barbara was a former kindergarten and first-grade teacher in Gary. She worked as a medical transcriptionist for over 20 years. She retired in 2003 from the scheduling department of the CATH Lab at Methodist Northlake and Southlake Campuses, after over 25 years of service. She was a very active member of First Presbyterian Church, where she was a Division D Deacon, a member of the choir and attended Bible study classes afternoon circle. Barbara was also a member of Delta Gamma Sorority, P.E.O. and numerous bridge clubs, both in the Gary area and Shelbyville. She participated in the Shelby Community Choir and volunteered at Major Hospital and the Shelby Community Health Center. She enjoyed shopping, reading, knitting, crocheting, music and attending the Silver Sneakers fitness group at Shelby County Athletic Club. Barbara was an avid IU basketball fan and displayed her IU flag proudly. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 23, 2014 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville and from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Friday, January 24, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church, 124 W. Broadway St. in Shelbyville. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church, with Rev. Mark Morningstar officiating. Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. (CST) Friday, January 24, 2014 at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville. Interment will be at Calumet Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Benessee Oncology Center, 2455 Intelliplex Drive, Shelbyville, Indiana.
