Barbara Jean Smith

Barbara Jean Smith, age 85, of London, Indiana, was born December 18th, 1931, to Nina and Hougham Hall Hendricks, Sr. of Amity, Indiana. Passed away in her home on June 10th, 2017. She married Norman Paul Smith on August the 4th, 1953, and he preceded her in death on March 9th, 1999. Barbara is survived by her daughters, Kathleen Miller and husband, Chuck, and Lisa Miller and husband, Howard, both of Shelbyville; brother, Hougham Hall Hendricks, Jr. and wife, Betty, of Fairland; grandchildren; Jeremy Miller and wife, Angela, Tiffany Wilson and husband, Ed, Brent Miller, Ashley Morgan and husband, Troy, all of Fairland, and Alisha McVey and husband, Daniel, of Boggstown and ten great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a son, Jonathan Paul Smith; brother, Robert O. Hendricks; and sister, Emily Ann Myers. Barbara graduated from Moral Township High School in 1950. After high school she worked at RCA in Indianapolis and later taught kindergarten with Rev. Clara Maye Rippel at the London United Methodist Church. She retired from Kroger Dairy (Indianapolis) in 1997. Barbara was a lifetime member of New Life United Methodist Church in Fairland, where she served for many years with the children’s program. She had a beautiful servant’s heart that loved her family, cooking, sewing, birds, flowers and every child she ever met. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville and from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, June 15, 2017 at New Life United Methodist Church, 6145 N 400 W, Fairland, with a celebration of her life at 11 am, led by Pastor Ben Biggs. Interment will be at London Cemetery in Shelby County. Memorial Contributions may be made to New Life UMC, with a note to Children’s Ministries.
