Bernice L. Werbe Hindman

Bernice L. Werbe Hindman, 87, of Shelbyville, passed away Saturday, November 18, 2017 at Franciscan St. Francis Health in Indianapolis. She was born January 6, 1930, the daughter of Frank and Hulda (Layton) Rusk. In February of 1950, she married James E. Werbe Jr., and he preceded her in death on May 24, 1975. Bernice married Rex Hindman on September 24, 1994, and he survives. In addition to Rex, Bernice is survived by her son, James E. Werbe III and wife, Julie, of Fishers; daughters, Christine Webber of Olney, Illinois, and Judy Montgomery and husband, Gary of Northern Shelby County; step-son, Kelly Hindman and wife, Karen, of Carmel; step-daughters, Susan McRoberts and husband, David, of Greenwood, and Sarah Finkle and husband, David, of Shelbyville; grandchildren, James Werbe IV and wife, Meagan, of Noblesville, Courtney Kimbro and husband, Jarad, of Matoon, Illinois, Colin Webber and wife, Angela, of Olney, Sean Montgomery and wife, Katie, of Springville, Iowa, Eric Montgomery of Indianapolis, Micah McQueary and husband, Bub, of Shelbyville, and Mark Robert Werbe, Jr., and wife, Carrie, of Flat Rock; 12 great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Bernice was also preceded in death by her parents; son, Mark Werbe; grandson, Gary Abram Montgomery; step-son, Randy Hindman; son-in-law, Ed Webber; brother and sister-in-law, Herbert “Bub” Rusk and wife, Flo; and sister and brother-in-law, Lucille Kristoff and husband, Joseph. She graduated from Madison Consolidated High School in 1948, and attended Hanover College. Bernice received her Master’s degree at Indiana Central College. Bernice was a member of First Christian Church for over 50 years, where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Christians Women Fellowship. She taught second grade at Pearson Elementary School for 25 years, retiring in 1994. Bernice loved to read and felt teaching children to read was her biggest accomplishment. Bernice was also a member of the National Education Association and Indiana Teachers Association. She was a volunteer at Major Hospital and the Free Medical Clinic. She enjoyed traveling and cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, November 20, 2017 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at the funeral home. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville. Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church, 118 W. Washington St., Shelbyville, Indiana 46176.
