Betsy Ross (Fleming) Hayes, 84 of Franklin, former Shelbyville resident passed away Thursday, July 12, 2007 at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin. Born October 1, 1922 in Shelbyville, she was the daughter of Royal R. and Edith (Ross) Fleming. She married Robert E. Hayes on February 16, 1947, and he preceded her in death on August 15, 2006. Survivors include her sons, Dr. John R. (wife, Barbara) Hayes of Zionsville and Dr. Daniel F. (wife, Jane) Hayes of Ann Arbor, MI; sister, Martha Anne Moberly Varnes of Indianapolis; grandchildren Daniel Hayes (wife, Bevin Madigan), Mary (husband, Jason) Tuttle, Benjamin Hayes, Stephen Hayes and Abagil Hayes; and great grandchild, Rowan Madigan Hayes. She also was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Richard Fleming. Mrs. Hayes had been the co-owner and operator, with her husband of the former Mary Lou Shoppe. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Tri Kappa and P.E.O. sororities and Tri Kappa Associate Women's Club. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, 34 W. Wahsington Street. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Dr. Rick Miller and the Rev. Robert Campbell officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Freeman Family Funeral Homes, Carmony-Ewing Chapels, 232 W. Broadway St. is handling the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Shelby County Meals on Wheels, 126 N. Harrison St., Shelbyville, IN 46176.
