Carl Dean Eberhart

Carl Dean Eberhart, 87, of Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin, formerly of Shelby County, passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin. He was born January 26, 1928, in Edinburgh, the son of Paul and Katherine (Stine) Eberhart. He married Sue Cresswell, and she preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his parents; son, Russel “Rusty” Dean Eberhart in 1977; and grandfathers, Carl W. Stine of Edinburgh and James D. Eberhart of Shelby County. Dean graduated from Mt. Auburn High School in 1946. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army 1953-1955, serving in Hamelberg, Germany with the 322nd Tech Batallion tank gunner. He was discharged at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Dean worked on the assembly line at General Electric/Wellman Thermal Systems for 35 years, retiring in 1991. He was also a farmer. He was a member of Mount Auburn Christian Church, Farmers Lodge No. 147 F&AM and past patron of Flat Rock Eastern Star. Dean was a past president of the Mount Auburn School Reunion, served on the board of directors and was a member of the Marietta Fire Department, and was a former Shelby County Trustee and Jackson Township Trustee and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. Dean enjoyed woodworking, taking care of his lawn, hunting and trapping. He was an avid reader. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville. Masonic services will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, immediately followed by the funeral service officiated by the Rev. Charles Stanley, Chaplain of the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin. Interment will be at Miller Cemetery in Shelby County, with military graveside rites conducted by the local military committee. Memorial contributions Farmers Lodge No. 147 Norristown; Miller Cemetery Association; Shelby County Humane Society and Johnson County Humane Society, envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
