Carl W. “Bill” Oeffinger, 82, of Shelbyville, passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at his residence.
He was born August 27, 1933, in Canton, Ohio, the son of Carl W. and Elsa M. (Herspool) Oeffinger. On March 26, 1954, he married his wife of 62 years, Shirley Lee Hanna, and she survives.
Bill is also survived by his sons, David M. Oeffinger and Daniel J. Oeffinger and wife, Mary, both of Shelbyville, and William L. “Bill” Oeffinger and wife, Theresa, of Lexington, Kentucky; a daughter, Diane J. McKee and husband, Ralph, of Fort Wayne; nine grandchildren, Christy, Bill, Britni, Becca, Emily, Mike, Kelly, Elizabeth and Erica; five great-grandchildren; and a niece and nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Evelyn Hossler and Norma Oeffinger.
Bill graduated from Lincoln High School in Canton, Ohio in the class of 1951; he then obtained his bachelor’s degree in Industrial Education from Purdue University in 1959.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and a deacon.
Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Korea.
He was the assistant plant manager at KCL from 1963 to 1973. In 1973 he became an underwriter at Farm Bureau Insurance in the commercial field retiring in 1993, with 20 years of service.
Bill was also a member of Canton Masonic Lodge F&AM.
He was an avid hunter.
Bill enjoyed baseball and played Class A Baseball in Canton, he was also a member of the Silver Foxes softball Team. He officiated swim meets for the high school swim teams, as well as the state finals.
He liked to attend Purdue University football games and enjoyed tailgating.
A gathering of friends will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, August 14, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church, 124 W. Broadway St. in Shelbyville.
A celebration of Bill's life will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, at the church, with Pastor Mark Morningstar officiating.
Services have been entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
