Carlton Barclay Batkins, 76, of Fountaintown, formerly of Newport News, Virginia peacefully passed away Saturday, October 17, 2015 at Major Hospital.
He was born April 1, 1939, in Newport News, the son of Linwood Carlton and Elizabeth Anne (Barclay) Batkins.
Carl is survived by his sons, Carlton Barclay Batkins Jr. and wife, Lisa, of Waynesboro, Virginia, and John Landon Batkins and wife, Alicia, of Columbia, Virginia; sister, Betty Vanderploeg and husband, Sam of Fountaintown, brothers, Dr. Frank Batkins and wife, Robin, of Oxford, Georgia, and David Batkins and wife, Tammy, of Mount Airy, Maryland; grandchildren, Stephen Batkins, Desiree’ Batkins, Landon Batkins, Stephen Ferguson and Ashley Ferguson; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Carl graduated from Warwick High School in 1957.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving during Vietnam, stationed in Alaska.
Carl attended an electrician apprenticeship Newport News Ship Building, where he worked as an electrician for over 30 years, retiring in 1994.
Carl was a member of Newport News United Methodist Church and the Virginia Peninsula Sportsman Association.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards. He loved spending time with his family and his beloved dog, Bebe.
He will be dearly missed by his loved ones, and will be best remembered for his sense of humor and generous ways.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, October 23, 2015 at Peninsula Funeral Homes, 11144 Warwick Boulevard, Newport News, Virginia.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 24, 2015 at the funeral home.
Interment will be at Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News, with military graveside rites.
Local arrangements were entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
