Carol Jean Cooper

Carol Jean (Haehl) Cooper, 97, of Shelbyville passed away Sunday, November 3, 2019 peacefully at her home. She was born December 25, 1921, in Shelbyville, the daughter of Earl F. and Blanche (Moore) Haehl. On January 31, 1944, she married Floyd “Mike” Cooper, and he preceded her in death on May 12, 2012. Carol Jean is survived by her son, Mike Cooper and wife, Charlotte, of Taipei, Taiwan; daughter, Jean Kessel and Mark Clark, of Yellow Springs, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She joins in heaven her parents; husband; daughter, Monique Dinsmore; brother, John Haehl; sisters, Martha Ann Creed, Mary Kathryn Marshall and Phyllis Hill Barton. Mrs. Cooper graduated from Waldron High School and Ball State University. She taught private Kindergarten and then 3rd grade at Major and Little Marion (Shelbyville Public Schools) before retiring after 35 years of service. A nearly lifelong resident of Shelby County, Mrs. Cooper was both the oldest and longest serving member of the First Christian Church of Shelbyville. Carol Jean was active in many social organizations in Shelbyville, including Church Women United, Vestavia Club, Retired Teachers Association and Delta Kappa Gamma. She enjoyed playing bridge in several bridge clubs. Carol Jean also enjoyed baking and sewing. She was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed the Cincinnati Reds, Indianapolis Colts and Purdue Boilermakers. Mrs. Cooper was a willing volunteer at her church and schools. She was an avid reader and supporter of the Shelby County Public Library. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, November 7, 2019 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, November 8, 2019 at the funeral home, with the Revs. Bill Horner and Beth Crouch officiating. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville. Memorial contributions may be made to Blue River Community Foundation, 54 W. Broadway St., Suite 1, Shelbyville, Indiana or First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 118 W.
