Chalmer Miller, 87, of Shelbyville, formerly of Fairland, passed away Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at Ashford Place Health Campus.
He was born June 20, 1927, in Shelby County, the son of Basil and Lena (Kirschbaum) Miller. On December 5, 1948, he married his wife of 65 years, Mary Frances Smith, and she survives.
Other survivors include his son, Gary Miller and wife, Vickie, of Lapel; daughter, Cindy Wetnight and husband, Ray, of Shelbyville; grandchildren, Chad Miller and wife, Megan, Jenifer Miller and fiancé, Toby Bushong, Chris Wetnight and wife, Frankie and Brad Wetnight and fiancé, Brittany Barwegen; and great-grandchildren, Kirsten Miller, Aly Miller and Elliot Wetnight.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson.
Chalmer was a lifelong Shelby County resident and graduated from Moral Township High School in 1945.
He was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ, serving on the church board and he was very instrumental in the building of the new church. Chalmer was also a member of the Blue River Lions Club and was a founder and former member of Bears of Blue River Camping Club.
Chalmer was a lifelong farmer and in later years he nurtured and groomed Mike Brown to take over the farming of his land. He had also formerly worked part-time at D & S Sales and Service as a parts manager. Chalmer and his daughter, Cindy formerly owned C & C Custom Framing in Shelbyville.
He was a former member of Northwestern Consolidated School District Board and served as president.
Chalmer enjoyed woodworking, the many outdoor activities associated with farming, gardening and camping.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 22, 2014 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, August 23, 2014 at the Evangelical United Church of Christ, 2630 S. Miller St. in Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, with Rev. Linda Frische-Mouri officiating.
Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville.
Chalmer’s family would like to express a special “Thank You” to the staff of Our Hospice of South Central Indiana and Ashford Place for the wonderful care he received.
