Charles L. Ayers, 83, of Nancy, Kentucky, a former Shelbyville resident, passed away Thursday, May 5, 2011 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.
Born August 23, 1927, in Shelby County, he was the son of Edward Ayers and Elizabeth (Metcalf) Ayers Swinehart.
Survivors include his daughters, Cindy (husband, Dub) Shrader and Melanie Workman, both of Shelbyville, Toni (husband, Jeff) Bennett of Islamorada, Florida; sons, Dana (wife, Catherine) Ayers and Kevin Ayers, both of Shelbyville; Jon (wife, Lenora) Ayers of Bremerton, Washington and Patrick (wife, Tina) Ayers of Manilla; sisters, Jean (husband, Mike) Thompson of Carmel and Bennie Beyer of Lafayette; fiance, Ruth Linville of Nancy; sisters-in-law, Marie Ayers of Shelbyville and Deloris Ayers of Anderson; 23 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, William Ayers and Adrian Ayers; and sister, Jerri Coll.
Mr. Ayers lived most of his life in Shelbyville, moved to the Florida Keys and resided there from 1990 to 1999, then moved to Kentucky, where he resided for the past 10 years.
He attended Shelbyville High School and was a former member of First Church of the Nazarene.
Mr. Ayers was a U.S. Marine veteran serving active duty.
He retired from Detroit Diesel/Allison in 1980, after 30 years of service.
He loved reading his Bible daily, fishing and cutting wood.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery
