Charles Phillip “Phil” Schutt, 90, of Rushville, formerly of Manilla, passed away Friday, March 27, 2015 at his residence, surrounded by his family.
He was born January 14, 1925, in Hancock County, the son of Charles H. and Ruby Edith (Dismore) Schutt. On January 29, 1955, he married his wife of 40 years, Vida Jones, and she preceded him in death on December 8, 1995.
Survivors include his daughter, Pamela Bradley and husband, Stephen, of Rushville; sons, Bryon Schutt and wife, Heidi, of Indianapolis, Millard Schutt and wife, Rebecca, of Rushville, and Darin Schutt and wife, Kathy, of St. Omer; sister, Rita Covalt of Gwynneville; six grandchildren; companion of 19 years, Betty Ashby; step-daughters, Sandra Coons and husband, George, of Rushville and Jean Bennett and husband, Perry, of Indianapolis; step-son, Jerry Ashby and wife, Maggie, of Rushville; six step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Charlene Northam.
Phil was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He retired from the U.S. Navy with 20 years of service, in January of 1963.
He was a member of Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Rushville, where he served as an elder, American Legion Post No. 102 in Morristown and Fleet Reserve Branch 130.
Phil was formerly a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service for 20 years, retiring in 1987.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at the funeral home, with Pastor John Wall officiating.
Graveside services will be at a later date at Zion Cemetery in Shelby County, with military graveside rites conducted by the local military committee.
