Charles Robert “Bob” Norman, born July 14, 1936, in Lebanon, Indiana. Died 11:45 p.m. April 6, 2014 at the Heritage House Convalescent Center in Shelbyville, IN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Howard and Ruby Ellen Louck Norman and a sister, Mary Jane Norman.
Bob graduated Frankfort High School and Purdue University with a B.S. degree in Economics. After graduation Bob joined the Army National Guard, he spent 6 months in active duty, finished eleven years of service, attended officer training at Ft. Benjamin Harrison and was graduated as a 2nd Lt.
He worked 5 years as a pharmaceutical rep for Merck, Sharpe Dohme before moving to Shelbyville in 1967 to become the first Administrator of the new Heritage House Convalescent Center. In partnership with the owner and builder, Robert W. Reed, he was responsible for helping get several other nursing homes built and in operation in various locations around the state.
A partnership with Janet Coers Mason and Linda Kuhn resulted in two Assisted Living Centers, Thornton Terrace in Hanover, IN and Cedar Court in Corydon, IN.
Bob held the office of President of the Indiana Health Care Association 1970, 1982 and 1983. During this time he served on the Health Facility Council established by Gov. Bowen, also represented the health care industry as a member of the Board Directors of Blue Cross.
He retired in 2006. Memberships were in, West Street United Methodist Church, Shelbyville Rotary Club, and Elks Club, and he was a 50 year member of Beard Lodge F.&A.M.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mae Parsons Norman and two sons, Charles David Norman of Shelbyville and Patrick Ray Norman of Lehigh, FL. and one grandson, Paull Robert Landers of Beech Grove.
A gathering of friends will be from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2014 at West Street United Methodist Church, 629 S. West St. in Shelbyville.
A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday at the church, with the Reverends Jerry Crouse and Carl Ewick presiding.
Graveside Rites will be held at Kilmore Cemetery at a later date.
Services have been entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
