Clara (Bassett) Alford, 102, of Greensburg, died Monday, April 11, 2005, at Morning Breeze Nursing Home, in Greensburg.
Born Aug. 11, 1902, in Shelby County, she was the daughter of the late George and Rose (Gray) Bassett. She married George Henry Alford in 1927, and he preceded her in death in 1979.
Survivors include three daughters, Sarah (husband, Fred) Deiwert of Greensburg, Ruth Stevens of Glenwood and Mary (husband, Herb) Richey of Lexington, Ky.; 11 grandchildren, Edwin A. (wife, Jane) Deiwert, Michael (wife, Wanda) Deiwert, Joyce Stevens (husband, Jeff) Honaker, Joe Stevens, Paula (husband, James) Richey, Edward A. (wife, Judy) Deiwert, Myron Deiwert, Mark Stevens, Mary Jane Stevens, John (wife, Margaret) Richey and the Rev. Sarah Richey; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel and Clyda.
Mrs. Alford had been a resident of Morning Breeze Apartments for the past four years. She previously lived in Rush County from 1927 to 1950, then on the Basset family farm, a Hoosier Homestead where Intelliplex Park is located, where they lived until 1979.
She graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1920 and attended Purdue University's Homemakers School.
Mrs. Alford was a member of Milroy United Methodist Church, for more than 70 years, and a former member of Farm Bureau and B.P. Club.
At the age of nine, she drove the second car in Shelby County.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Carmony-Ewing Harrison Street Funeral Home, 819 S. Harrison St.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Revs. Robert A. Land and Sarah Richey officiating.
Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
