Claude E. Smith, 99, of Shelbyville, passed away Sunday, July 19, 2015 at Major Hospital in Shelbyville. He was born October 4, 1915, in Boggstown, the son of Robert and Beulah (Hall) Smith. He married Marjorie N. Goodwin on December 31, 1947, and she preceded him in death on February 15, 2012. Claude is survived by his daughter, Patricia L. Butcher and husband, Wes, of Shelbyville; grandchildren, Amy Dillon and husband, Heath, Lori Coffman and husband, Clifford, and Jeffrey Butcher and wife, Amanda; great-grandchildren, Katelynn Coffman, Haley Coffman and Reagan Dillon; and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents. Claude graduated from Flatrock High School in 1933. He was a farmer, retiring in 1980. He also trained horses for harness racing. Claude was a member of the Indiana Standardbred Association, and a former member of the Blue River Lions Club. He enjoyed coon hunting and sports, especially Indiana Pacers and Indiana University basketball. Claude enjoyed horse pulls and sulky races. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 23, 2015 at the funeral home, with Rev. Doug Finney officiating. Interment will be at Boggstown Cemetery in Boggstown. Memorial contributions may be made to Girls Inc., 904 S. Miller St., Shelbyville, Indiana 46176.
