Clifford E. Grigsby, 87, of Shelbyville died Thursday, July 28, 2011, at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove.
Born October 16, 1923, in Rushville in Rush County, he was the son of Benjamin Hill and Mauzy Beatrice (DeMint) Grigsby. He married Judith Holland Harcourt on December 23, 1945, and she preceded him in death on November 12, 2009.
Survivors include daughter, Sally (husband, Michael) Vaught of Shelbyville; grandchildren, Bennett (wife, Toni) Vaught of Shelbyville and Kate Vaught of Cincinnati, Ohio; and great-grandson, Jackson Vaught.
He also was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James L. Grigsby.
Mr. Grigsby graduated from Milroy High School in 1941, received his bachelor's degree from Franklin College, his master's degree from Butler University and his doctorate of education from Indiana University.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving as a sergeant during World War II in the South Pacific battles of Iwo Jima and Guam.
Mr. Grigsby began his educational career as a teacher, counselor and administrator at Greensburg Community Schools. He was then the director of teacher education and licensing at the Indiana Department of Public Instruction. He later was an associate professor of counseling and educational pschology and associate professor emeritus of education at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis.
He was a member of Moscow Christian Church, national service officer and life member of Disabled American Veterans, Scottish Rite 32nd degree and Mystic Tie Lodge. He was an honorary member of Blue Key Society and was named a Kentucky Colonel by the state of Kentucky.
Clifford enjoyed antiques, Indiana art, history and working out daily at the Shelby County Athletic Club.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, August 1, 2011 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Evie Stuard officiating.
Interment will be in Moscow Cemetery in Rush County.
