Dan Buckley, 72, of Avon, passed away Saturday, November 25, 2017 at Brownsburg Meadows in Brownsburg after fighting a brief battle, secondary to lung cancer and ischemic dementia.
He was born September 30, 1945, in Shelbyville, the son of James Allen and Virginia Louise Rigsbee. On May 12, 1968, he married his wife of 49 years, Mary Helen Bowlby, and she survives.
In addition to Mary, Dan is survived by his sons, Christopher Alan Buckley and wife, Donna, of Noblesville, and Matthew Dale Buckley and wife, Jamie, of Springfield, Tennessee; sister, Janet Louise Armstrong of Indianapolis; brother, Robert Allen Buckley and wife, Amy, of Batesville; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers-in-law, Charles Armstrong and Harry Smith; and niece, Deborah Rosen.
Dan graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1963.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving two tours in Vietnam.
Dan attended Brownsburg Baptist Church.
He previously owned a Service Master Franchise in Muncie for 20 years. Dan was also a salesman for General Truck Sales in Muncie and Stoops Freightliner in Anderson, where he sold semis and heavy duty trucks. Later he transported hazardous waste for Heritage Environmental Services in Indianapolis.
Dan was a founding father of the Hamilton Township Volunteer Fire Company in Muncie.
A gathering of friends will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday, December 3, 2017 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
A Celebration of Dan’s Life will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with Pastor Mike Abbott officiating.
Inurnment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville.
