Donald Eugene Robinson, 86, of Shelbyville, passed away Monday, August 8, 2016 at Waldron Health and Rehabilitation in Waldron.
He was born January 19, 1930, in Shelbyville, the son of Max and Mildred (Briggeman) Robinson. On May 22, 1960, he married his wife of 56 years, Sara Jo (Dale) Robinson, and she survives.
Donald is also survived by his sons, Gregory L. Robinson and wife, Jill, of Corydon, and Brian D. Robinson of Chicago, Illinois; sister, Beverly Plank and husband, Dale, of Corvallis, Oregon; and grandchildren, Kate Hoffman, Rosemary Robinson, Grant Robinson and James Robinson.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Donald graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1948, where he played on the 1947 Shelbyville High School Championship basketball team. He received his bachelor’s degree from Indiana Central College in 1952, and he obtained his master’s degree from Indiana University.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict.
Donald was a member of First United Methodist Church.
He coached basketball for 10 years, prior to teaching mathematics and coaching track and tennis at Tech High School in Indianapolis from 1965, until retiring in 1990. After retiring in 1990, he taught for five years at IUPUI.
Donald enjoyed playing tennis and played for three years while studying at Indiana Central College.
He was a true family man and loved the time he spent with his grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 11, 2016 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville and from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Friday, August 12, 2016 at First United Methodist Church, 34 W. Washington St. in Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Revs. Colin Cress and Robert Campbell officiating.
Interment will be in Van Pelt Cemetery in Shelby County, with military graveside rites conducted by the local military committee.
