Donald G. Mayes, 80, of Franklin, passed away, Thursday, January 16, 2014 at his residence.
He was born July 29, 1933, in Anderson, the son of Lowell Lester and Wertha Roma (Smith) Mayes. On, December 27, 1952, he married his wife of 61 years, Barbara Allen, and she survives.
Other survivors include his son, Ronald L. Mayes and wife, Gloria, of Ingalls; daughter, Sharon K. Mayes of Shelbyville; grandchildren, Kyle Root and Shelby Root, both of Shelbyville and Nicholas Mayes and wife, Nichole, of Avon; great-grandchildren, Josette and Oliver Mayes; and step-great-granddaughter, Isabella Buck.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Lester Mayes Jr., LeRoy Mayes and Paul Keith Mayes.
Donald attended Bengal Christian Church.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne, serving at Fort Bragg.
Donald retired from Fisher Guide Lamp in 1987, after 35 years of service.
He formerly owned and operated a used furniture store, Mayes Furniture, from 1965 to 1972.
Donald was a member of Shelbyville American Legion, Shelbyville Fraternal Order of Eagles and Disabled American Veterans in Indianapolis.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 pm, Sunday, January 19, 2014 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be at 11 am, Monday, January 20, 2014 at the funeral home, with Doug Adams officiating. Military services will be conducted by the local military group.
Interment will be at Anderson Memorial Park in Anderson.
