Dorothy Fern Smith, 95, of Shelbyville, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at Major Hospital in Shelbyville surrounded by her loving family.
She was born September 14, 1919, in Greensburg, the daughter of the late Henry Edward and Thursa Pearl (Lambert) Long. On June 11, 1937, she married her husband of 57 years, Paul H. “Pat” Smith, and he preceded her in death on March 18, 1995.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Linda Kay Chandler and husband, Gerald “Jerry”, of Milroy; sons, Larry Stephan Smith and wife, Ellen, of Shelbyville and Kent M. Smith and wife, Brenda, of St. Paul; eight grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Henry “Casey” Long; sisters, Helen Hendrickson, Janet Nash, Bernice Rigby, Alma Bishea, Ada Rump, Jenny Marie Long and Erma Long; and step-granddaughter, Natalie Jones.
Dorothy was a member of the Big Flat Rock Christian Church. She enjoyed going to church activities and liked to participate in everything. Dorothy was also a member of the Eagles and the Loyal Order of the Moose Auxiliary.
She loved to travel, play cards and bingo.
Dorothy loved her family and cherished the time she spent with each of them.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 7, 2015 at the funeral home, with Dr. Bob Burgbacher officiating.
Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville.
