Earnest Carl Chappelow, 91, of Shelbyville passed away Monday, May 17, 2010 at Major Hospital.
Born July 12, 1918 in Shelby County, he was the son of Charles and Milda M. (Jones) Chappelow. He married Phyllis Jean Lawless on December 28, 1946, and she preceded him in death on January 3, 1992.
Survivors include his sons, Glenn Charles "Chuck" Chappelow of Shelbyville and Rodger Carl Chappelow of Jennings County, Indiana; daughter, Jean Ann (husband, Stephan) Stepp of Dubuque, Iowa; grandchildren, Samantha McIntosh, Josh (wife, Areca Everage) Chappelow, "Ben" (wife, Mary Beth) Chappelow, Megan Chappelow, Christopher Stepp, Johnathan Stepp, Jessica Stepp and Anthony Stepp; great-grandchildren, Gabriel McIntosh, Kalie Everage and Destiny Everage.
He also was preceded in deathby his parents and half brother, Raymond E. "Skippy" Jones.
Mr. Chappelow was a lifelong resident of Shelby County.
He was employed at the former General Electric Co. Shelbyville plant for 20 years.
Mr. Chappelow was a U.S. Army and Army Air Corps veteran, serving during World War II in the South Pacific and for 33 months in New Guinea, headquartered with the Western Flying Command. He received a Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars.
He was a member of First Christian Church; Masonic Lodge No. 28 F&AM and William Hacker Masonic Lodge No. 759 F&AM; Naamah Chapter No. 73 Order of Eastern Star; Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis and Fort Wayne Valley; White Shrine of Jerusalem, past watchman of the Shepherd, James Whitcomb Riley chapter, Greenfield; Honor Lodge No. 37, where he was a past associate guardian and past grande officer; and Job's Daughters in Shelbyville.
Mr. Chappelow was formerly an assistant scout master for Boy Schout Troop No. 207.
A gathering of friends will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St., a Masonic ritual will begin the funeral service at 1 p.m.
Burial will be at Second Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Johnson County, with military graveside rites conducted by the local military committee.
