Elmer "Leroy" Mollenkopf, 82, of Shelbyville, died Monday, June 12, 2006, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
Born Jan. 6, 1924, in Hamilton County, he was the son of Cecil Herbert Mollenkopf and Glenna Ann (Whitmore) Mollenkopf Davis. He married Janice Marilyn Phares on Dec. 20, 1946, and she survives.
Other survivors include one daughter, Diana Karen (husband, Paul ?Squeak?) Merritt of Shelbyville; two sons, Dana (wife, Elaine) Mollenkopf of Richmond and Darrell (wife, Patricia) Mollenkopf of Shelbyville; two sisters, Ruthanna Julian of Mesa, Ariz., and Helen Marie Seymour of Fishers; one stepbrother, James R. Davis; seven grandchildren, Mary Ogden, Jeff Sosbe, Jacob Mollenkopf, Rachael Mollenkopf, Sara Mollenkopf, Kim Mollenkopf and Ryan Mollenkopf; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one great-grandson.
Mr. Mollenkopf had been employed with Naval Avionics in Indianapolis from 1951 until retiring in 1976. He previously had worked at J.C. Penney?s in Shelbyville.
He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Mr. Mollenkopf graduated in 1942 from Lawrence Central High School, where he held the record for the mile track event, and attended Lain Business School.
He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, A.A.R.P., National Association of Retired Federal Employees, American Legion Post No. 70 and First Baptist Church.
Mr. Mollenkopf loved crocheting, puzzles and his children and grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Freeman Family Funeral Homes, Carmony-Ewing Broadway Chapel, 232 W. Broadway St.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Ron Robinson officiating.
Interment will be in Bennett Cemetery in Shelby County.
