Elva Chaney-Gobel, 83, of Monon, died Monday, Feb. 13, 2006.
Born May 22, 1922, in Pulaski County, Ky., she was the daughter of Robert Lonzo and Edna (Hamblin) VanHook. She married Oather Chaney on Feb. 20, 1941, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 23, 1972. She married Stacey E. Gobel on March 3, 1979, and he preceded her in death on July 6, 1992.
Survivors include two sons, Doyle Gene (wife, Brenda) Chaney of Shelbyville and Ellis Dean (Kimberly) Chaney of Monon; one stepdaughter, Nancy (husband, Steve) Piercy of Shelbyville; two sisters, Erabell Bales of Indianapolis and Eulene Zimmerman of Charleston; three brothers, Edwin VanHook of Somerset, Ky., Vencon VanHook of Kentucky and Louie VanHook of Burnside, Ky.; five grandchildren, Doug Chaney, Leann (husband, Todd) Angerman, Bradley (wife, Mandy) Chaney, Eric (wife, Lindsey) Chaney and Ashley Chaney; four stepgrandchildren, Megan Nagel, Nicholas Nagel, Wesley Nagel and Sueann (husband, Bryan) Shaffer; six great-grandchildren, Luke Chaney, Matthew Chaney, Evan Shaffer, Brant Angerman, Craig Shaffer and Alex Chaney; and one stepgreat-grandchild, Trent James.
She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Curtis VanHook and Hoover VanHook; one sister, Irene Yeary; and two grandchildren, Darrin Chaney and Allison Marie Chaney.
Mrs. Chaney-Gobel was a former Shelbyville resident.
She farmed in her early life and worked in the canning factory during war time. She later was employed at the former KCL Corp. She also had owned her own custom drapery business and made draperies for the former Bryant-Roth Furniture and JC Penneys.
Mrs. Chaney-Gobel was a member of Lewis Creek Baptist Church.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Freeman Family Funeral Homes, Carmony-Ewing Broadway Chapel, 232 W. Broadway St.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Cliff Bunch officiating.
Burial will be in Bennett Cemetery, in Shelby County.
