Erma H. Waltz, 76, of Shelbyville, passed away Friday, August 30, 2013 at Ashford Place Health Campus in Shelbyville.
She was born on June 23, 1937, in Ballardsville, Kentucky. Erma was the daughter of W. Eugene and Edith (Caywood) Hammond. She married Fay Hamby on December 26, 1960, and he preceded her in death on January 30, 1965. Later she married Carroll Waltz on January 24, 1998, and he survives.
Other survivors include her son: Stephen (wife, Kendra) Hamby of Ocala, FL; stepdaughters: Nisa (husband, David) Hensley of Shelbyville, IN, and Debra (husband, Dale) Cummins of Liberty, IN; stepson: Phillip (wife, Teresa) Waltz of Shelbyville, IN; grandchildren: Mariah Hamby, Donovan Hamby and Nathan Hamby; step grandchildren: Staci Wilcox and Craig (wife, Desiree) Waltz; step great-grandchildren: Jace Wilcox and Jax Wilcox; brothers-in-law: Bill Salyer of Louisville, KY, and Ray Hamby of Frankfort, KY; sister-in-law: Evelyn Stroup of Shelbyville, IN; nieces: Dana (husband, Paul) Coakley, Shirley Nance, Melissa (husband, Greg) Cordier, and Vicki (husband, Larry) Greenwell; nephews: David (wife, Linda) Salyer, Ken (wife, Tracy) Salyer and Larry (wife, Cheryl) Salyer.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Evelyn Salyer.
Erma graduated from Oldham County High School in Buckner, KY, in 1955, received her Home Economic degree from the University of Kentucky in 1959 and her Master’s degree in 1974 from Union College in Barbourville, KY. She taught for 27 years as a home economics teacher in Oldham County.
She was a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in Shelbyville, IN, and previously Ballardsville Baptist Church in Ballardsville, KY. Erma actively served as a leader in American Baptist Women to support Christian missions around the world. She was an organist for more than 40 years and taught Sunday school to children.
Mrs. Waltz enjoyed scrapbooking and making photo albums for her grandchildren, traveling, cooking, and working in the yard with her flowers. She loved to spend time with her family especially her grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 pm, Sunday, September 1, 2013 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St.
Services will be at 10 am, Monday, September 2, 2013 at the funeral home, with Pastor Bryan Trotter officiating.
Interment will be in Valley of Rest Cemetery in LaGrange, KY, at 2:30 pm, Monday with Tommy Purvis officiating.
