Eugene Elmer “Gene” McCain, 93, of Shelbyville passed away Thursday, December 10, 2020 at Walker Place in Shelbyville.
He was born April 10, 1927, in Shelby County, the son of Elmer H. and Ida E. (Drager) McCain. On May 20, 2000, he married Eva M. (Light) Snapp, and she preceded him in death on May 27, 2018.
Gene is survived by his son, Mitchell E. McCain of Fairland; daughter, Tracy A. McCain of Fairland; nieces, Teleia Lower of Bloomington, and Michelle White and husband, Rev. Brian, of Fishers; nephew, Doug Lower of Lincoln, California.
In addition to Eva, Gene was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Merrilyn Lower; nfant twin brothers; and niece, Lynette Frazier.
Gene graduated in 1945 from Shelbyville High School; and took courses at Purdue University.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines, serving from 1945 to 1946.
Gene was an State Farm insurance agent for 46 years, retiring in 1993.
He was a member of both the American Legion Post No. 70 and Eagles Aerie Lodge No. 766 for over 65 years.
Gene was active with SCUFFY.
He enjoyed boating, water skiing, playing softball, volleyball and playing his tuba.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, December 17, 2020 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
Private services will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, CDC guidelines requiring a mask and social distancing will be observed. There will be a limit of 25 people allowed inside the funeral home at a time.
