Evelyn Faye Day, 94, of Shelbyville passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at Heritage House Convalescent Center.
Born April 7, 1918, in Shelbyville, she was the daughter of Sherman and Rachel (Bennett) Keeling. She celebrated 50 years of marriage to Herbert J. “Herb” Day on November 11, 2011, and he preceded her in death on January 26, 2012.
Survivors include her daughter Barbara Hey (husband, John) Henk of Lafayette; grandchildren, Amy Strawn, Stacy Strawn, Matt Strawn and Jeff Strawn; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Luke, Levi, John Thomas, Drew, Mark, Annie, Kate and Lexi; sister-in-law, Mary Margaret Keeling of Columbus, Ohio; niece, Carolyn Davis of Columbus, Ohio; and nephews, John Keeling and Rick Keeling, both of Columbus, Ohio.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and only brother, Charles Keeling.
Mrs. Day was a member of First Christian Church.
She graduated from Shelbyville High School and was the May Festival Queen in 1935. She attended Ball State University, Indiana University and received her bachelors of science from Butler University.
Mrs. Day was a member of Vestavia Club, Indiana State Teachers Association and Retired Teachers Association.
She was an English and Literature teacher for 40 years, teaching at several schools including Shelbyville Community Schools.
Mrs. Day assisted in starting a library at Camp Atterbury, and was the Junior Red Cross Chairman of Shelby County during World War II.
Her hobbies were cooking and baking, she was known for sharing her recipes and passing them down through the generations. She has a collection of cookbooks from various local organizations and churches. Her roses were her pride and joy, of which she had many varieties.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 am, Friday, September 7, 2012 at First Christian Church, 118 W. Washington St. in Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be at 11 am, Friday at the church, with the Rev. Nathan D. Wilson officiating.
Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
