Floyd E. "Mike" Cooper

Floyd E. "Mike" Cooper, 89, of Shelbyville passed away Saturday, May 12, 2012 at Major Hospital. Born August 6, 1922 in Newton County, he was the son of Wilbert and Esther (Sage) Cooper. He married his wife of 68 years, Carol Jean Haehl on January 31, 1944, and she survives. Other survivors include his son, Michael (wife, Charlotte) Cooper of Taipei, Taiwan; daughter, Jean Kessel of Yellow Springs, Ohio; brothers, Robert (wife, Martha) Cooper of Upland, California, Roy (wife, Avalynne) Cooper of Goodland and Richard (wife, Norma) Cooper of Wooster, Ohio; sisters, Joan (husband, Ron) Peacock of Lafayette, Kay Torres of New Jersey and Joyce (husband, Jim) Sharp of Monticello; grandchildren, Carriann (husband, Alan) Alabastro, Jason Cooper, Baye-shan Cooper, Weston Cooper, Jennifer (husband, Steve) Napolitan, Denise Dinsmore, Mindy (husband, Joel) Smith, Curtis Dinsmore, Clint Dinsmore, Sam (wife, Aleksa) Franklin and Luci Franklin; eight-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Monique Dinsmore; brother, Gerald Cooper; and son-in-law, Jay Kessel. Mr. Cooper formerly taught business classes in White Pigeon, Michigan for three years, he then worked at The Shelbyville News for 39 years as auditor, retiring in 1987. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army 2nd Armored Division, serving during World War II. Mr. Cooper was a member of First Christian Church and Friends of Shelbyville-Shelby County Public Library. He graduated from Brook High School in 1940, receiving his bachelor's degree in 1946 and his master's degree in 1948 in business from Ball State University. Mike was an avid reader, having read over 4,000 books since his retirement. He also enjoyed gardening and yard work. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 17, 2012 at the funeral home, with Rev. Nathan D. Wilson officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Shelbyville-Shelby County Public Library, 57 W. Broadway St., Shelbyville, Indiana 46176 or First Christian Church, 118 W. Washington St., Shelbyville, Indiana 46176.
