Frederick W. Nevels, 89, of Fairland, passed away Monday, November 19, 2012 at Morristown Manor in Morristown.
He was born July 5, 1923, in Oolitic, Indiana to William and Ollie (Thompson) Nevels. He married Nellie Bell Rutherford on April 15, 1942, and she preceded him in death on February 27, 2002.
Survivors include his daughter, Carol (husband, Bob) Frentz of Martinsville; brothers, Bob Nevels of Ridgefield, Washington; sisters, Pat Whaley of Dayton, Ohio, Bernice Bruhn of Noblesville, Cassie Brockman of Vancouver, Washington and Glenna Reynolds of Carmel; seven grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert Nevels in 1983 and four sisters, Mildred Presley, Maxine Johnson, Ruth Nevels and Thelma Smith.
Mr. Nevels was formerly employed by Chrysler in Indianapolis as a jobsetter for over 30 years, retiring in 1988.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, last serving on September 8, 1946, during World War II.
Mr. Nevels attended the Boggstown Presbyterian Church.
He was a member of the Sugar Creek Masonic Lodge # 279, where he was past master, Scottish Rite, York Rite, Knights of York, St. Bartholomew Council, Eastern Star, Knights Templar and the Shelby County Historical Society.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, November 23, 2012 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. with Masonic Rites conducted at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 24, 2012 at the funeral home, with Rev. Sandi Martin officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the local military committee.
Interment will be in Boggstown Cemetery.
