Gail D. Gibson, 73, of Country Club Heights, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, at her home, with her family by her side.
Born Aug. 29, 1932, in Miami, Fla., she was the daughter of the late Gilbert and Elsie (Watkins) King and stepdaughter of the late Wallace Anderson. She married John Milton Gibson on June 6, 1954, at First United Methodist Church, and he survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Bonnie (husband, Jeffery) Winkler of Phoenix, Ariz., and Robin (husband, Daniel) Winings of Indianapolis; son Jeffry Gibson of Shelbyville; eight grandchildren Amber (husband, David) Grimes, U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Jeffry Christopher Gibson, Kelly Gibson, Kyle Winings, Kathleen Winings, Kevin Winings, Daniel Winkler and Ryan Winkler; and great-granddaughters Justice Gibson and Zoey Isaac. A third great-granddaughter, Gail's namesake, Abigail Grimes, is due to be born later this month.
Mrs. Gibson graduated in 1950 from Broad Ripple High School, in Indianapolis, and attended the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing.
She served as a teacher's aide for Shelbyville Central Schools, first at Coulston Elementary School and later at Shelbyville Junior High School, retiring in 1985.
Thereafter, through repeated cancer surgeries and chemotherapy treatments, she served as a volunteer at Major Hospital and its Benessee Oncology Center, the American Cancer Society's Reach to Recovery Program and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
Mrs. Gibson was a member of First United Methodist Church and Chapter BL of P.E.O.
The family expresses its gratitude and admiration for the staffs of Hospice of South Central Indiana and the Oncology Department at Major Hospital for their loving care of Gail.
At Gail's request, she will be cremated and her ashes scattered over Miami's Biscayne Bay at a later date.
All are welcome at a gathering of family and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the parlor at First United Methodist Church, 34 W. Washington St.
A memorial celebration will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church.
