Garnet M. Wertz, 94, of Shelbyville, passed away Thursday, December 23, 2010 at Hospice of South Central Indiana in Columbus.
Born June 5, 1916, in Jackson Township, Shelby County, Indiana, he was the son of George and Anna (Mohr) Wertz. He married Margaret S. Breeze on June 9, 1945, and she survives.
Other survivors include his daughters, Shirley Ann (husband, Bob) Tucker of Shelbyville and Marilyn Kay (husband, Frank W.) Bailey of Mooresville; son, Robert (wife, Georgia) Wertz of Shelbyville; grandchildren, Scott Tucker, Duane Bailey and Amanda Thoman; and great-grandchildren, Mariah Tucker, Makayla Bailey, Megan Bailey, Cooper Thoman and Camden Thoman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Wanda Wertz and Bernadine Delores Anderson; brothers, Hubert Wertz, Herman Wertz and Wayne Wertz; and grandson, Greg Bailey.
Mr. Wertz retired from Shelby Gravel after many years of service in 1998.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II in the Battle of the Bulge and Normandy.
Mr. Wertz was a 65 year member of the American Legion, where he was a past commander; other memberships include, Norristown Masonic Lodge, Indianapolis Scottish Rite, Forty and Eight Club, and an association member of Knights of Columbus.
He loved his work, basketball, Bobby Knight and IU.
Mr. Wertz graduated from Mt. Auburn High School in 1934.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Monday, December 27, 2010 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St.
Funeral services will be at 10 am Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at the funeral homes, with the Rev. Robert Simpson officiating.
Interment will be in Miller Cemetery.
