Gaye L. Slater

Gaye Lynn Slater, 68, of Shelbyville passed away Thursday, March 4, 2010 at Heritage House Convalescent Center. Born April 13, 1941, in Knox County, Indiana, she was the daughter of John and E. Merle (Elliott) Acker. She married Dallas Gene "Doc" Slater on October 16, 1982, and he preceded her in death on October 1, 2005. Survivors include her daughters, Kyla Thompson of Indianapolis and Deena D. (husband, Doug) Willis of Pasadena, California; step-sons, Christopher L. Slater and Dallas Slater Jr.; granddaughter, Jillian Willis; niece, Kim (husband, Bill) Schroeder; nephew, J. Bradley Beard; and father of her children, Donald Leroy Thompson of Vincennes. She was also preceded in death by her parents; sons, John Donald Thompson and Raymond Leroy Thompson, and sister, Phyllis Acker Beard. Mrs. Slater had formerly resided in Vincennes until moving to Shelby County in 1987. She was the floral manager for Marsh, until retiring in 1994. Mrs. Slater enjoyed visiting with her granddaughter "Jillian", gardening, cooking and crocheting. She graduated from Bruceville High School in 1949. Mrs. Slater was a member of the Morristown Christian Church. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Frazier Chapel, 124 E. North St. in Morristown. Visitation will also be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home, Bruceville Chapel, 618 W. Main Street in Bruceville, Indiana. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home, Bruceville Chapel, 619 W. Main Street in Bruceville, Indiana with Pastor Glenn Turner officiating. Interment will be in Royal Oak Cemetery in Wheatland. Memorial contributions may be made to the Morristown Christian Church.
