George Herbert "Herb" Lay, 82, of Norris, Tennessee, formerly of Shelbyville, passed away January 17, 2012.
Born February 1, 1929, in Vevay, he was the son of John and Lydia (Dow) Lay.
He is survived by his wife, Denise (Denny) Lay; daughters, Vicki (husband, Gary) Oldham, Dara (husband, Gregg) Hebbe and Lea Anne (husband, Yancy) Chipman; sons, Allen (wife, Lisa) Lay and Bryan (wife, Julie) Lay; stepchildren, Randall (wife, Monica) Grimes and Lesley (husband, Gerald) Moore; grandchildren, Lydia and Gary Jr. Oldham, Ben, Lucas and Jenna Hebbe, Aryn and Braden Ross, Travis and Trevor Lay, Jordan and Natalie Lay and Madison and Morgan Grimes; and great-grandson, Ethan Lay.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; two brothers; a grandson, Tyson Lay; and a great-grandson, Cadyn Lay.
Herb was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
He retired from Greyhound after a 35-year career, where he earned a 2 million mile safe driving award.
Herb loved his family and enjoyed the company of his friends and dogs. He was always ready with a story or joke, which will truly be missed.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, 34 W. Washington St. A memorial servic will follow, with Rev. Bob Land officiating.
Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
