George W. “Bill” Hobbs, 97, of Shelbyville, passed away Monday, October 16, 2023, at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
He was born November 3, 1925, in Shelbyville, the son of George and Pearl (Luse) Hobbs. On June 27, 1954, he married Marian Joy Bass, and she preceded him in death on September 3, 2019.
Bill is survived by his son, Glen W. Hobbs and wife, Tina, of Shelbyville; brother, Emory Hobbs of Noblesville; grandchildren, Michael Hobbs and wife, Melissa, Sarah Gibbs and husband, Brandon, Traci Mahley and husband, Jeff, and Scott Scudder and wife, Lori; step-grandchildren, Christina Kaake, Crystal Rhoads, Katie Herbert, Katrina Watson, Kelli Mejia, Robin J. Bandy and Lea Ann Davidson; and numerous great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren, step-great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to Marian, Bill was preceded in death by his parents; step-son, Keith Scudder; and brothers, Carl J. King and Richard S. Hobbs.
Bill graduated from Boggstown High School in 1944, and attended Sam’s Technical Institute (ITT) for electronics.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean War, as a radio operator on a C-46. Bill later served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves 434th Troop Carrier Wing.
Bill was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, for over 70 years, where he served as an elder and deacon.
He was a member of the Blue River Valley Amateur Radio Society, a 50-year member of the Shelby Masonic Lodge No. 28 F&AM and the Murat Shrine.
In his younger days he was an acrobatic pilot. Recently he enjoyed spending time with family especially his grandchildren. Bill also enjoyed participating with the Ham Radio Club and his call letters were N9TMO. Another of his favorite pastimes was attending the monthly breakfast at the Masonic Lodge.
Visitation will be from 11 am to 1 pm, Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
Masonic services will begin at 1 pm Saturday at the funeral home and will be followed by funeral services, officiated by Rev. Gretchen Schneider.
Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville, with military graveside rites conducted by the local military committee.
