George Louis Sheehan, 93, of Shelbyville passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at Major Hospital.
Born November 19, 1918 in Louisville, Kentucky, he was the son of Patrick Henry and Nancy Ellen (Ormes) Sheehan. He married Doris Liebert on August 5, 1961, and she survives.
Other survivors include his daughters, Maureen Sheehan and Eileen Sheehan, both of Shelbyville, Terri (husband, Rich) Strouse of Indianapolis and Carol (husband, Sam) Pogoni of Cincinnati; son, Michael George Sheehan of Ashland, Wisconsin; brother, Charles Sheehan of Winter Springs, Florida; granddaughter, Molly Sheehan; sisters-in-law, Barbara Sheehan of Louisville and Jo Ann Nevins of Libertyville, Illinois; brother-in-law, Louis ?Bud? Liebert of Louisville; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John, Ed, Robert and William Leo Sheehan; and a sister, Dolores Sacksteder.
Mr. Sheehan began his career teaching Latin at Aquinas Country Day in Louisville, and in 1982 he retired from teaching seventh grade English at Shelbyville Junior High School.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a bombardier in the South Pacific. He was a member of the 307th Bomb Group and 13th Air Force, also known as the Jungle Air Force/the Long Rangers.
Mr. Sheehan graduated from St. Joseph College in Rensselaer and attended Catholic University in Washington, D.C.
He was a devout Catholic and an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he was a member of Liturgy Committee and a Eucharistic minister. He served on the prayer line committee for many years. Other memberships include C.P.P.S. (Missionaries of the Precious Blood), Knights of Columbus, Holy Name Choral Club in Louisville, St. Joseph Social Club, Friends of the Library, Shelby County Retired Teachers Association, Veterans of Foreign War and Retired Officers Association.
Mr. Sheehan was a former president of St. Joseph Social Club, volunteer AARP tax aide at Shelby Senior Services and trained for Civil Defense.
He was a gentleman and a scholar. He enjoyed attending various reunions of the 13th Air Force and Bombardiers.
George liked to watch professional football on television, working crossword puzzles, garden and raise tomatoes.
Mr. Sheehan loved his family and his granddaughter.
He enjoyed classical music, especially Beethoven and opera.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 29, 2012 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St., and the rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 125 East Broadway St., with Father Aaron Pfaff officiating.
Interment will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, with a military graveside service.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church Repair Fund, Shelby County Retired Teachers Scholarship Fund, American Diabetes Association, American Lung Association or Hospice Southern Care.
