George W. Murnan

Mr. Murnan was born September 13, 1923 in Shelby County, Indiana. He passed away on September 14, 2007 at Ashford Place Health Care Center. He was the son of Alex Murnan and Elsie (Curry) Murnan. Mr. Murnan married Maxine F. Marshall on November 25, 1942 and she survives. He was employed by Amtrak (Beech Grove), Penn Central and New York Central Railroads, retiring after 43 years of service in 1982. Also surviving are daughter Patsy (Michael) Weintraut, Shelbyville; son Mike Murnan of Shelbyville; Melissa (Mark) Archer, granddaughter of Lafayette, IN; Michael John (Celeste) Murnan, grandson of McCordsville, IN; Sister Joann Abel of Indianapolis, and sister Mary Alice (Frank) Smith of St. Paul, IN. He was preceded in death his parents, one son, Dennis E. Murnan and one brother Carl R. Murnan. Mr. Murnan served in the Army Infantry and Merrials Marauders, while in the service he was stations in Berma, China, and India, being honorably discharged in 1945. He was a member of the Fairland United Methodist Church, the American Legion of Shelbyville, and a past Fire Chief of the Fairland Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Murnan graduated from Moral Township High School in 1941. While in school he played basketball with the team being County Champs and he attained the highest freethrow percentage. He was a handyman, hard worker, and enjoyed the theatre. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shelby County Cancer Association or the Fairland United Methodist Church. Friends may call from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday September 18 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St., Shelbyville, IN 46176. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday September 19, 2007 at Fairland United Methodist Church, 205 W. Washington St., Fairland, IN 46126. Interment will be in London Cemetery Military graveside rites will be performed by the Military Committee. Pastor Susan Davis will officiate.
