Gladys Joanne Compton

Gladys Joanne “Jody” Compton, 93, of Shelbyville, passed away, Sunday, October 29, 2023, at Compass Park (Indiana Masonic Home) in Franklin.

She was born August 4, 1930, in Shelbyville, the daughter of Charles R. Phillips and Grace (Tucker) Phillips Morrison.  On July 25, 1947, she married Harry “Allen” Compton, and he preceded her in death on April 14, 1994.

Jody is survived by her son, David Allen Compton and wife, Michele, of Indianapolis; daughter, Gayle Spurling and husband, Michael, of Edinburgh; grandchildren, Ronnie D. Compton and wife, Tami, Michelle Whitis and husband, Marvin, and Tifany Hensley and husband, Scott; great-grandchildren, Cody Whitis, Beth Whitis Kinman and husband, James, Lance Hensley, Allison Hensley, Tim Compton and wife, Kristen, and Ryan Compton and wife, Amanda; great-great-grandchildren, Addison, Maci, Kaylee, Daisy Mae, Kaysen, Kyra, Karina, Audrey and Liam.

In addition to Allen; Jody was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Alton “Bud” Morrison; son, Rick Compton; grandson, Nathan Spurling; great-great-grandsons, Dakota and Mason Compton; brother, Gail Phillips; and sister, Doris Moore.

She attended the Lewis Creek Wesleyan Church, with her daughter.

Jody formerly worked for the Shelbyville News, retiring in 1984, with 18 years of service.

She enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, watching NASCAR and tending to her flower gardens. 

Jody also loved to ride on her grandson’s motorcycle and participate in various bowling leagues.

In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, she was the baseball scorekeeper for  Southwestern High School.

Visitation will be from 10 am to Noon, Thursday, November 2, 2023 at  Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

Funeral services will follow at Noon on Thursday, at the funeral home, with Rev. David Gates officiating.

Interment will be at Patterson Cemetery in Shelby County.
