Harriett Lee McCarty

October 29, 1923 — February 23, 2014

Harriett Lee McCarty, 90, formerly of Shelbyville, passed away Sunday, February 23, 2014, after a brief period of declining health. She was born October 29, 1923 in Shelby County, the daughter of the late Morris Bass and Mary Belle (Rafferty) Bass. Harriett married Charles A. McCarty, and he preceded her in death in 1999. Survivors include her daughter, Margaret Schakel; four grandchildren, Katie Merrell, Stephen McCarty, Meredith Schakel and Evan Schakel. She has four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her son, Phillip R. McCarty, and her sisters, Jean Carr and Marybelle Kremer. Harriett graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1941. She formerly attended the First Christian Church in Shelbyville. Harriett enjoyed sewing, home decorating, reading and antiques. She lived most of her adult life in Englewood, Ohio where she was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She moved to Hendersonville, NC in 2011 and resided at LakePointe Landing where she made several wonderful new friends. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, February 28, 2014 at Freeman Family Funeral Home, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville. Funeral services will be held at 11am, Friday, at the funeral home, with Rev. Bill Horner officiating. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery.
