Hazel I. Caughey, 91, of Shelbyville, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Walker House in Shelbyville.
She was born August 20, 1927, in Ohio, the daughter of Irvin and Flossie (Carrico) Thompson. Hazel graduated from Southport High School in 1945. On May 18, 1946, she married Arlie J. Caughey, and he preceded her in death.
Hazel is survived by her daughters, Joyce Anne (Caughey) Spiller and husband, Robert “Rob”, of Atascadero, California, and Diana Dee Caughey of Shelbyville; son, Alan J. Caughey and wife, Martha L., of Mundelein, Illinois; grandchildren, Gregory Spiller, Jeff Spiller, Aaron Spiller, Neale Caughey and A.J. Caughey; great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Mikayla, Nolan, Evelyn and Easton; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to Arlie, Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Howard Thompson, Hartzel Thompson, Oscar “Sonny” Thompson and Norman Thompson.
She was a member of the Morristown Christian Church, where she and her husband were youth group leaders.
Hazel was a telephone operator for Bell Telephone.
She was also a member of the Merry Mixers Home Economics Club and a Women’s Reading Club.
Hazel was an excellent cook, and enjoyed baking, tending to her flower gardens and staying up on current affairs.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 10, 2019 at the funeral home.
Interment will be at Asbury Cemetery in Morristown.
