Helen Ann Evans

Helen A. Evans, 93, of Shelbyville, passed away Saturday, April 22, 2017 at MHP Medical Center in Shelbyville. She was born April 9, 1924, in Marion County, the daughter of Albert J. and Helen P. (Jeovana) Stewart. On February 12, 1944 in St. Joseph Catholic Church, she married Raymond F. Evans, Sr., and he preceded her in death on May 20, 1994. Helen is survived by her daughter, Vicki Bernard and husband, Wendell, of Shelbyville; son, Ray F. Evans, Jr. and wife, Sheila Grace, of Waldron; grandchildren, Barbara Kenkel and husband, Dan, Suzi Bruin and husband, Bret, Raymond F. Evans III, Whitney Leigh Evans; great-grandchildren, Joshua Lee Kenkel, Matthew Nicholas Kenkel, William Bernard Bruin, Brooke Christine Bruin and Beau Christopher Kenkel; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, James A. Stewart; and sisters, Yvonne Rhodes and Jeanne Templeton. Helen graduated from Fairland High School in 1941, received her bachelor’s degree from Indiana Central University (now University of Indianapolis) and her master’s degree from Indiana University. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Ann’s Altar Society and the Diligent Diggers Garden Club. Helen began teaching at St. Joseph Catholic School in September of 1966. She taught kindergarten and first grade, retiring in 2000, with 35 ½ years of service. She received the Sagamore of the Wabash Award. Helen enjoyed playing bridge, knitting, reading and collecting advertising pens and political buttons. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville, with the rosary recited at 3:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 125 E. Broadway St. in Shelbyville, with Father Jon Maung officiating. Interment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Shelbyville. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic School, Helen A. Evans Fund, 127 E. Broadway St., Shelbyville, Indiana 46176. Helen’s family would like to thank the staff and residents at Ashford Place Health Campus and MHP Medical Center for the support and care she was given.
