Henry E. Smith, 87, of Shelbyville passed away Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at Major Hospital. Born November 12, 1923 in Lasco, Alabama, he was the son of Joseph Emerson and Vinnie Elizabeth (Webb) Smith. He married Edith Marie Davis on July 28, 1943, and she preceded him in death on September 4, 1997. Survivors include his son, Joe Smith of Lasco; daughters, Sharon (husband, Steve) Fansler of Shelbyville and Rose (husband, Brent) Callahan of Manilla; eight grandchildren, Gary Gahimer, Christi (husband, Rick) Smothers, Jennifer (husband, Chris) Wainscott, Joe Callahan, Kyle (wife, Shelley) Callahan, Brad Callahan, Melissa Callahan and Amanda Callahan; eight great-grandchildren, Kerigan, Caymen, Sean, Sophie, Edith, Henry, Kylan and Olivia. He was also preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Edgar, Agee and Bo; one infant sister; grandson, Sean Timothy Callahan; two great-grandson, Camden "Wink" Smothers and Cayden "Dink" Smothers. Mr. Smith had lived in Manilla until 1988, then moved to Lasca, residing there until 2008, when he moved to Shelbyville. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Normandy during World War II. Mr. Smith had worked at Knauf for 32 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of Creel's Chapel Methodist Church in Haltomville, Alabama, and a member and past president of GBBA. Mr. Smith was an avid hunter and outdoorsman and loved Alabama. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm, Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. Funeral services will be at 10 am, Friday, December 17, 2010 at Creel's Chapel Methodist Church in Haltomville, Alabama. Interment will be in Forest Springs Cemetery.
