Herbert J. ?Herb? Day, 84, of Waldron passed away Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Major Hospital.
Born June 30, 1927 in Shelbyville, he was the son of Willard J. and Naomi D. (Maxwell) Day. He married Evelyn Keeling on November 11, 1961, and she survives.
Other survivors include his daughter, Barbara (husband, John) Henk of Lafayette; granddaughters, Amy Strawn and Stacy Strawn; grandsons, Matt Strawn and Jeff Strawn; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Luke, Levi, John Thomas (JT), Drew, Mark, Annie, Kate and Lexi.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Day was a lifelong Shelby County resident.
He graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1945 and received his bachelor's degree from Ball State University in 1950.
Mr. Day was a U.S. Marines veteran, serving during World War II.
He retired from teaching, after 37 years, in 1987 and had taught social studies at Major, Colescott and Shelbyville Junior High schools. He had coached junior high football and freshman basketball. After his father retired from teaching, Herb was hired to teach U.S. history in his father's former junior high classroom.
Mr. Day was a member of First Christian Church, where he served as Sunday school teacher, youth group leader, elder and deacon.
He also was a member of Ball State University 50-Year Club, Retired Teachers Association, Indiana Historical Society, Shelby County Historical Society and a lifetime member of American Legion Post No. 70.
Mr. Day had also served as clerk at the voting polls in Geneva for several years.
Herb was an avid sports fan, particularly of IU. He also enjoyed gardening, golf, fishing trips to Michigan and playing volleyball at the McNeely Center. He loved his three cats "like children."
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, January 30, 2012 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. and from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, 118 W. Washington St. in Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Nathan Wilson officiating.
Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
