J Wilfred "JW" Jenkins, 85, of Shelbyville passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
Born October 9, 1922, in Lafayette, he was the son of Wilfred E. and Mary (Shaw) Jenkins. He married Bettie Jane Hoffman on September 12, 1942, and she preceded him in death on August 3, 2000.
Survivors include his daughter, Janna (husband, Mike) Carr of Shelbyville; brother, Ivan C. Jenkins of Madison; grandchildren, Jinjer and Benjamin; stepgrandchildren, Aaron, Casey and Carrie; great-grandchildren, Everett, Caroline, Jackson, Veda, Samantha and Sophia; great-stepgrandchildren, Alexa and Austin; many nieces in Shelbyville; and many nieces and nephews in Madison and New Castle.
He also was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary E. Bramwell.
Mr. Jenkins resided in Shelbyville since 1953.
He had been a teacher for Shelbyville Central School, teaching at Addison Elementary School from 1953 to 1981 and at Loper Elementary School from 1981 to 1984. During the summer he would do brick masonry. He was co-owner and operator or Jenkins' Tax Service from 1969, until retiring in 1984.
Mr. Jenkins was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He graduated from Hanover College in 1947, with a bachelor of arts degree, and from Indiana University in 1951, with a master of science degree, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.
Mr. Jenkins was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, American Legion, Indiana State Teachers Association, National Education Association and Shelby County Teachers Association.
He was a loving devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Freeman Family Funeral Homes, Carmony-Ewing Harrison Street Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Chapel, 301 W. State St. in Madison with visitation one hour prior.
Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Madison.
