J. William “Bill” Bagley, 99, of Shelbyville, formerly of Indianapolis and Bradenton, Florida, passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2013, at Major Hospital in Shelbyville.
Bill was born September 26, 1914, in Herrick Township, Pennsylvania; he was the son of Boyd O. and Kathryn P. (Woodburn) Bagley. He married Monica C. Mahoney, and she preceded him in death in 1968. On June 16, 1973, he married Kathleen A. (Oates) Sanders, and she preceded him in death on May 19, 2010.
He is survived by his sons, Vincent (wife, Sue) Sanders of Greenfield, Russ (wife, June) Sanders of Carmel and Scott (wife, Teresia) Sanders of Indianapolis; daughters, Margaret (husband, Sam) Tedrowe of Indianapolis, Nancy (husband, Mark) McNeely of Shelbyville and Kathie (husband, Mike) Scherrer of Fishers; son-in-law, Richard Harris of Avon; daughter-in-law, Sara (husband, Ed) Moody of Shelbyville; brother-in-law, Holland “Dutch” (wife, Jeanette) Oates of Appleton, Wisconsin; 24 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and loving caregiver, Ann Whitlow of Shelbyville
Bill was also preceded in death by his daughter, Mary C. Harris; son, James Edward “Jim” Sanders; brother, Harold Bagley and sisters, Maxine Goodrich and Marie Harbst.
He graduated from Rome High School in Rome, Pennsylvania in 1932 and Indiana Business School.
Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp, serving from 1941 to 1945 in Washington, Louisiana, Morocco, North Africa and Italy. He was an avid attendee of World War II Reunions of his fighter squadron, the “Screaming Red Asses”.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Odd Fellows Lodge, American Legion and a former member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks.
Bill was an investment broker for Raffensperger & Hughes for 40 years, retiring in 1989.
He received the Sagamore of the Wabash Award on September 26, 2004.
Bill was an avid baseball fan, bridge player, golfer, master griller, coin collector, gardener and he enjoyed reading.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, October 11, 2013 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12 p.m. on Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 125 E. Broadway St. in Shelbyville, with Father Aaron Pfaff officiating.
Private family interment will be in Summit Lawn Cemetery in Westfield at a later date.
