James C. Toon

James Carter Toon, 81, of Morristown passed away Thursday, March 17, 2011 at his residence. Born February 13, 1930 in Indianapolis, he was the son of Carter Harry and Frances Marie (Bass) Toon. He married Phyllis Ann Sleeth on September 3, 1954, and she preceded him in death on November 22, 2005. Survivors include his sons, Mark Henry (wife, Dee Dee) Toon and Mike Toon, both of Morristown; daughters, Sherri Marie (husband, Gale) Kleiman of New Palestine and Martha Ann (husband, Jeff) Jarman of Rushville; brother, John (wife, Marjorie) Toon of Shelbyville; grandchildren, Marcus Toon, Tony Toon, James D. Toon, Brandon Toon and Kayla Toon; great-grandsons, Maxwell Vise and Xavier Toon; brother-in-law, Bill Sleeth of Whiteland; sister-in-law, Judy Smith of Martinsville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Daniel Vise; and brothers-in-law, Richard Sleeth and Bob Sleeth. Mr. Toon had been employed at Flasher Barricade and Light C., in Indianapolis, retiring in 1977 after 25 years of service, and also was a lifelong farmer in Shelby and Hancock counties, retiring in 1993. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict as a sergeant in the medical corps. Mr. Toon was a member of American Legion Post 102, where he was a past post commander and a as 10th District commander; Morristown Masonic Lodge No. 931; and a former member of Morristown Order of Eastern Star Lodge No. 316. He enjoyed playing cards and checkers, fishing and mushroom hunting, and he like country and gospel music. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 pm Sunday, March 20, 2011 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Frazier Chapel, 124 E. North St. in Morristown, with Masonic rites at 5:30 pm. Funeral services will be at 10 am Monday, March 21, 2011 at the funeral home, with Mike Smith officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted. Interment will be in Asbury Cemetery.
