J. Herbert Wisker, 89, of Shelbyville passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2008.
Born April 14, 1918, in Addison Township, he was the son of Edward Anton and Margaret Irene (Zobel) Wisker. He married Justine Piper at St. Vincent Catholic Church on April 17, 1941, and she preceded him in death on December 18, 2004.
Survivors include his daughters, Elizabeth A. Fallis of Shelbyville and Anita J. (husband, Thomas) Kacena of Berwyn, Illinois; sisters, R. Marjorie Kuhn of Shelbyville and Mary Alice Miner of New Port Richey, Florida; grandchildren, James D. (wife, Sylinda) Fallis of Rushville, Thomas A. (wife, Stacy) Fallis of Shelbyville, the Rev. T. Edward Kacena of Muncie and Katherine (husband, Guillermo) Madico of Natick, Mass.; and great-grandchildren, Whitley D. Fallis of Shelbyville, Atenas B. Madico and Christopher W. Madico, both of Natic; brother-in-law, Charles W. Davis of Shelbyville; and many nieces and nephews.
He also was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Charles E. Wisker.
Mr. Wisker was a lifelong resident of Shelby County.
He farmed in Shelby County for 39 years; served as assistant cashier and manager of the Manilla brandch of Rushville National Bank; and served as vice president, investment officer and assistant trust officer of Shelby National Bank, prior to retirement. He served three years as secretary on board of directors of the Shelby National Bank.
Mr. Wisker served on the board of directors of Major Hospital for 20 years, including eight years as president. Upon his retirement from the board, he was named chairman emeritus of the board and his portrait is displayed in the boardroom. He also served on the board of directors of the Major Hospital Foundation and for 15 years as chairman of the U.S. Savings Bond Program of Shelby County.
He was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Frank O'Bannon in 1998 for his service to the community over many years. He also received the Shelbyville Rotary Club's Humanitarian Award in 2004 and the Liberty Bell Trophy for patriot served from the U.S. Savings Bond Department. In February of 2008, he received the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Citizenship Community Heritage Award.
He graduated from St. Joseph Catholic High School and completed courses through Rural Electric Membership Corp. and numerous courses through the American Institute of Banking.
Mr. Wisker was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he had served as president of the Parish Council. He was a past member and officer of the Manilla Lions Club; and past director and treasurer of Shelby County Chamber of Commerce.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2008 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes, Carmony-Ewing Harrison Street Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St., with rosary at 3:30 p.m.
A funeral mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 125 E. Broadway St., with the Revs. T. Edward Kacena and Chris Craig officiating.
Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
